People debate if we need to pay all this extra money for organic food. It’s a good point, there is arguably not much nutritional difference between organic and non-organic so really, what is the big deal and the high price tag all about?
It’s more about what you’re NOT getting when you buy organic (or spray-free): you’re not getting fruit and veg covered in pesticides.
Why are pesticides an issue?
- We need all the good bacteria and microflora on fruit and vegetables – they are an integral part of a healthy diet and much needed in our guts to enhance our breakdown and absorption of nutrients.
- Pesticides are used to kill bacteria, to protect our food. But what of the bacteria in our gut? Our body is actually 90% bacterial cells and 10% human cells. Think about it for a moment as you take your next course of antibiotics…
- Round-up (as one example) isn’t just an issue because it kills bacteria, it does this by impairing the ability to make neurotransmitters. WE NEED these neurotransmitters. I know it seems really random – but the bacteria in our gut actually PRODUCE many hormones and chemicals our bodies need to function. I don’t know about you, but I NEED serotonin in my life! (release of serotonin has a lot to do with turning on happiness)
- Our gut-lining is bring destroyed by these chemicals!!!
- If we spray them on our food they are leeching into our waterways and honestly, I’m going to stop there because it hurts my head…you get the picture…
You don’t have to buy certified organic produce, but I do highly recommend trying to find some local farmers at the market or through a coop that will offer spray-free produce.
If you’re in Brisbane and want to get hooked up with some amazing spray-free produce, let me know and I’ll point you in the right direction. #lovemysprayfree
