I’m going to keep this as brief as I can – the new 5-Star Food Rating System that has been brought in to replace the Heart Foundation Tick….rubbish. Total. Complete. Rubbish.

When the number 1 ingredient is sugar – 0 rating right? Wrong.

When the number 1 AND number 2 ingredients are sugar (or sugar by another name) – 0? Nope.

Now unless you’ve had your head in a very deep sandpit I’m assuming you’ve seen the scientists now arguing over whether sugar should be regulated in our food – now that we know it’s ADDICTIVE and TOXIC. Yep, that’s right. Some scientists are arguing it should be regulated like a drug, it is THAT bad for our health. Yet here is a health system that gives RED LIQUORICE 2.5 stars out of 5. Milo cereal is about 4…I’d give it 4 out of 100.

Smoked salmon scores lower. I mean seriously people.

So the argument is they are rating the products in each category – so Milo cereal rates 4 against other cereals (still disagree but I see what they are aiming at). The issue is people generally aren’t going to read it this way. We are looking at a 5-star system, you would assume 4 is better for your health than 1 or 2 and in a rush after work you would grab quick, obvious choices.

So in a nutshell, it’s crap, don’t look at the stars. Healthy wholefoods as much as possible and saturated fats are not your enemy. I have written about the benefits of a paleo diet before – have a read here.

A big shout-out to the amazing Jessie Reimers who started the petition against the Heart Foundation and is now out to change this Star-Rating system. You can learn more about her amazing journey on her blog: Get a Fresh Start.

Correction – SIGN the petition. Your kids don’t deserve diabetes and heart disease because of this idiocy. Because Nestle and the government policy-makers are inextricably intertwined. We all owe it to the future generations to get this sorted once and for all.
