To begin this story, let me just clarify – I’m not about being skinny. I think we all know by now that it can be equally unhealthy. It is the amount of fat that surrounds your ORGANS, that is ultimately unhealthy. So you can be skinny and have fatty liver, as I used to. Or you can be larger and be fit and strong. Obesity is a massive issue however and telling people to just learn to love themselves as they are is a little bit of a stretch if how they are is leading to an early grave. We need to learn to love ourselves so that we will nourish and respect ourselves with all the good stuff and less of the processed rubbish.

While I’m busy busting myths can I just say that exercise is NOT the key to losing weight. I’m not saying it’s not fabulous for a whole host of other things – it’s really important for mental wellbeing, hormonal balance, detoxing by getting lymph moving… loads of stuff. But not so much for losing weight. The reason for this is that you are boosting your metabolism with exercises, so you are ultimately needing more calories and unless you have a will of iron you are likely to eat more.

So why the obesity epidemic then? Here are a few ideas:

  1. Toxic load…in our food, our medicine, our environment. Fat is actually our friend. Sort of. When the body comes across something it can’t break down it tends to wrap it up in fat to keep it away from vital organs to prevent organ damage. Pretty smart. Problem is we are surrounded by toxins – chemically, environmentally and even EMOTIONALLY. I’ll come back to this.
  2. Carbs and sugar are stored as fat. Fat does not make you fat, as we have been led to believe for the last 40 years. The research by Keys that was the starting point for the fat-is-evil campaign was cherry-picked. He picked out the people who supported the result he wanted and ignored the rest. (Scary to think what other research might be done the same way…)
  3. Self-worth and emotional eating. If we don’t love ourselves then we tend to put some pretty self-destructive things in our mouths at times. Many people emotional eat (maybe all of us at times?) and it’s a hard nut to crack because, well, you’re emotional and so logic has gone for a bit of a walk.

So back to the toxicity issue – I need to share an amazing story. A friend of mine lost weight, 8kgs to be exact by doing NONE of the usual things. She didn’t change her diet, she didn’t exercise. What she did do was remove all the chemical cleaners, synthetic fragrances, soaps and toxic products from her home. That’s it.

So if you can remove some of the toxic load from your life – remove the chemical cleaners, store-bought soaps and frangrances. Air freshners. All of it. Then you are reducing your toxic load = reducing your need to store fat. Simple. 8kgs of simple.

How?

Here are a few super simple ideas:

Super simple (no-tox) cleaner/bench spray

Add to a 500mL glass spray bottle

3 parts water

1 part vinegar

30-40 drops of the uplifting and cleansing wild orange essential oil*

Super simple natural air freshner

Add to a 200mL glass spray bottle

200mL water

20-30 drops Lemongrass* essential oil

Shake and spray!

If you haven’t grabbed a spray bottle yet, just drop a few drops of EO inside the toilet roll.
